Smokin’ Oaks Barbeque reopens after fire

smokin oaks barbque reopens after fireA popular new local BBQ spot is finally reopening its doors on Thursday after a fire closed the restaurant down last April. Smokin’ Oaks Barbeque on Boundary Street plans to reopen Thursday at 11am, some seven months after a fire started on the stove inside the kitchen and spread to the building’s roof before fire crews arrived to put it out.

With the extensive damage to the building, owners Mike and Karel Jones have been performing non-stop repairs and renovations over the summer and fall.

“We had to remove the entire kitchen and replace several appliances as well as the stove and hood system and then replace and repair the roof ,” Karel said.

“The dining area required extensive cleaning as well. The work seemed never-ending.”

She added that they took advantage of the opportunity to update the decor in the dining room. The ceiling tiles needed replaced and Mike built some new lighting that will give it an ‘artsier’ look.

After opening its doors in December of last year, the new restaurant became popular among locals offering a menu that included Mike’s own recipes for pulled and chopped pork, ribs, salads and a particularly good homemade Brunswick Stew.

“We were having a great time until the spring, and the setback has been exhaustive,” Karel added. “Now our focus has been on getting reopened.”

When the spot reopens Thursday morning, patrons can look for an updated menu and the community will be invited to attend a grand reopening celebration.

“Since we first opened our doors we’ve enjoyed meeting new people and making lots of new friends. We’ve been especially blessed by the outpouring of concern and the offers of help that folks from all over Beaufort have offered us and we look forward to repaying that kindness.”
