Sears closing Hometown store in Port Royal
Another big box retailer is pulling out of the Beaufort area. It was just announced this past week that the Sears Hometown store in Port Royal will be closing its doors for good after 14 years next to the Piggly Wiggly. This follows on the heels of Best Buy’s departure from Cross Creek Shopping Center and the recent closing of the KMart in Beaufort Town Center.
The store announced its closing last week via its Facebook page and is holding a going out of business sale over the next few weeks.
The store stocked lots of items including tools, home goods, lawn & garden supplies and bedding along with bigger ticket items including furniture, stoves, washers & dryers and refrigerators and freezers.
Everything is currently 30% off and the sale percentages will increase as time goes by and the store nears its undisclosed closing date, which is expected to be around July 23rd. Most of the smaller items have been transferred to other Sears locations but most of the big ticket items including washers & dryers, ranges, refrigerators and riding mowers are still available in Port Royal….while they last.
Sears announced last week that up to 100 of its 882 Hometown stores will be closing after the company suffered a $9.4 million loss in its first quarter, MarketWatch reported over the weekend.
Most Sears Hometown stores are run by independent dealers and franchisees. The manager of the Port Royal store, Jason Baxley, did not return our email seeking comment on the location’s closing.
We hate to see any business close up shop in the Beaufort area, and the local Sears presence in our market will surely be missed.
