SCETV special to feature Beaufort County faces, SC celebrities

scetv Several Beaufort County faces will be featured in a special edition of SCETV’s Palmetto Scene on Thursday, May 17th at 7:30 pm. The show will center on the benefits of literacy in every stage of life. The program celebrates The Great American Read, which is an eight-part PBS series on the power of reading.

The special kicks off with the cries of a newborn as it highlights the work of Born to Read, a Beaufort-based program that targets new moms.

Next, the show highlights Tail Waggin’ Tutors. They’re a group of pet owners whose trained dogs sit and comfort students during oral reading in schools and after-care programs.
Also featured is the quirky-titled book club I Like Big Books and I Cannot Lie. It’s made up of Bluffton-area moms who commit to reading, despite the time constraints that come with raising a family.

Finally, viewers will witness the excitement from assisted living residents at Brookdale on Hilton Head as the Beaufort County Bookmobile pulls up for its bi-weekly visit. The Bookmobile is equipped with large print literature and audio books of popular authors. It also has a wheelchair lift on board for residents to load and unload at ease.

“When it came time to produce this show, the easiest part was finding people in Beaufort County who promote literacy,” Holly Bounds Jackson, ETV Lowcountry Director of Operations and Content, said. “As a parent, it is comforting to see so many around us who value and encourage reading.”

The special will also include messages from several South Carolina-born celebrities like Vanna White and Leeza Gibbons.
