Market Report: Habersham's Farmer's Market (and First Friday)

Market Report: Habersham's Farmer's Market (and First Friday)

By Susan Clark |  First Friday at Habersham offers more than your typical farmer’s market.  You can find classic cars, arts & crafts, live music, a variety of baked goods, and even a wet down for the children provided by the Fire Department.

Running from 4pm to 9pm, I arrived by 6 p.m. which meant the market was in full swing.  The Joshua Foxx Band was banging it out on stage, children played with hula hoops and beach balls and couples walked along the booths checking out all the market had to offer.

Vendor Jannie Smith of Jannie’s Breads said she’s been bringing her breads and sweet treats to Habersham for three years now.  Smith said she has always cooked, however, after having an accident she made a life change and started baking bread as a new career path.  The bread making then extended into other treats such as her Red Bliss cupcakes and homemade pound cake.

“I know they need to taste it because the minute they taste it… they want it,” Smith said as she encouraged a group of ladies to taste pieces of her bread and then her red velvet cake.

Another vender Roy Green has also been coming to Habersham for some time now.

“It’s a hobby for me. I like to meet people and get out,” Green said.  He provides a variety of fruits and vegetables which he grows on his small farm in Seabrook.  Green says he enjoys farming.

“It keeps me in shape,” Green said.

Market attendee Diane DeWitt said that she came out to see what the market had to offer while visiting her sister who lives in Habersham.

“I look forward to the start of [First Friday] every year,” DeWitt said.

And from what I can tell, many people enjoy the marketplace that Habersham has to offer.  A real community-feel.
