Gas up the boat and fire up that grill, it’s Labor Day Weekend

Since 1884, the first Monday in September has been a holiday in the US, as a tribute to our dedicated workforce that has helped mold our great country into what it is today.  Many other countries have International Workers Day or May Day instead, commemorating struggles for workers’ rights.  To most people in North America, however, Labor Day is above all the last-blast of summer fun, and for many kids, the last day of freedom before Back to School.Labor Day Parade (of workers) in New York City, early 1900s

Even though many school districts now start classes in August, the long Labor Day weekend is still the big farewell to summer time. Families that already have started school get a chance to take a quick breath and enjoy some time together before the full swing of fall activities gets under way.

Here in Beaufort, we are lucky enough to have an extended summer and plenty of more days out on the water. This three day weekend is sure to bring plenty of BBQ’s, fun in the sun, splashing around in the water, lines dropped in hopes of snagging the big one, catching waves and gathering with friends and family.

Land’s End Woodland River Festival

Of course, we also have the Land’s End Woodland River Festival. The festival offers something for everyone.  Enjoy music, food, craft vendors, dancers and more. The festival runs Friday and Saturday at Land’s End on St. Helena Island. Get more info of the festival’s many events here.

You can find lots of good Beaufort stuff to do in our Things To Do section.

Temperatures across the area will be in the upper 80s for the most part and the humidity that Beaufort is known for will be enjoying the holiday along with us, but expect it to rain on Friday and Saturday.

Many Beaufortonians will all be packing up their beach gear into the car and heading out to Hunting Island. As summer winds down the beaches will be less crowded, the shells will be more abundant and we will be able to stretch out just a little bit more on the sand.

However, this weekend expect a little crowding as the vacationers enjoy one last summer weekend at our beautiful beach. If you are headed to the famous sandbar to spend your Labor Day, always remember safety first. No one wants to spend the holiday in the hospital.

However you plan to spend your Labor Day weekend, please remember to relax, and enjoy.

Isn’t that the point?

Happy Labor Day, Beaufort.

Lots of locals will be spending part of the weekend enjoying Hunting Island Beach.
