Butterflies in migration starting to show their stuff in Beaufort

Butterflies showing their stuff in BeaufortBe on the lookout for lots of color throughout the Beaufort area.  Every fall, several butterfly species including gulf fritillaries and beautiful and majestic Monarch butterflies make their annual mad dash across North America to Mexico and the Caribbean, stopping over for a time in the Lowcountry to juice up on local nectar for the long journey giving us a most intricate natural phenomenon.

These guys are into communal roosting, which makes for a great show for nature lovers who happen to catch the act. Monarchs have a wingspan the size of a baseball and cruise along flapping only when necessary, conserving energy for the long flight south. Migrations usually last through November.

And, they’re just making Beaufort and the sea island that much prettier.
