By Cindy Reid | Let the kids have their night. My night at the Beaufort Water Festival is always Motown Monday. The entertainment was provided by the fantastic group Deas Guyz who perform a seamless set of Motown classics as well as more current crowd favorites. This year they were great as always, keeping the crowd on their feet through renditions of “Stagger Lee”, “Shout”, “Cupid Shuffle”, “Soul Man” and many others.
I love the Water Festival. I don’t care about the crowds, the “challenging” parking, and the sometimes iffy weather. The whole thing is a chance to see friends, listen to fantastic live music, and enjoy being at our gorgeous Waterfront Park. But Motown Monday seems to be something special , a night where the middle aged ( such as myself) can enjoy “our” music side by side with the younger generations, a night where grandparents spontaneously break into dance, where normally staid folks sing loudly along with “Signed ,Sealed, Delivered “ because we know all the words. And no one looks at us funny.
And Deas Guyz know just how to keep the crowd happy. After a slight technical glitch tonight with their lighting, which forced the group to take a fifteen minute break, they came right back at us with “My Girl”. It does a heart good to see couples who probably don’t dance in public all that much practically run to the dance area in order to pull their sweetie close and croon the words. It’s the kind of event where if you don’t have a partner you can always dance with a child or the friends you came with- the important thing is to dance and have FUN!
A big favorite was a couple of Barry White tunes, followed by three Michael Jackson numbers. “Billy Jean” literally rocked the park! I even saw Mayor Billy K, tapping his toes with a big smile on his face, in the crowd. “Cupid Shuffle” was another winner, the ladies were racing each other to the front to line up for the dance and pockets of line dancing broke out throughout the park.
Thank you Beaufort Water Festival for another fantastic event and thank you Deas Guyz for a magical Motown Monday!
Note- If you missed the show or just want more, Deas Guyz play regularly at several venues in Hilton head and Bluffton, and they are well worth the drive down there. Check out their website for further info.
