Pedro Menéndez de Avilés 1519-1574 “The Last Crusader”
March 9 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Discover the path that led Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the founder of the 1566 settlement at Santa Elena, to achieve what many others had attempted and failed in the previous 50 years. Through ongoing struggles with the elements, the unknown, resentful Spanish bureaucrats, wary and hostile natives, and rapacious enemy captains, Menendez persevered to fulfill much of his vision for the colonization of La Florida and died unexpectedly during a return trip to Spain in 1574, shortly after he had been given command of the largest armada ever assembled in Europe, which many believe was intended to lead a Spanish invasion of England.
